One Ecosystem to greet delegates at the 11th ESP World Conference in Darwin

21 May 2025

Themed “From global to local ecosystem services: pathways to Nature-based Solutions inspired from Down Under”, the 11th Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) World Conference will take place between 23rd and 27th June 2025 in Darwin, Australia. Registration for the event will remain open until 15 June.

Together with local hosts from the Charles Darwin University, the ESP network expects hundreds of delegates from around the world, including researchers, practitioners and policy-makers at the Darwin Convention Centre. The conference programme includes keynote speeches from ten renowned experts, as well as plenty of parallel panel, interactive and poster sessions, and workshops.

ESP11 topics include:

  • Local and Indigenous values and ecosystem services: Understanding the role of Indigenous and local community knowledge and value systems in shaping sustainable pathways.
  • Pathways to Nature-based Solutions (NbS): Exploring successful models from local to global scales, and how they can be applied elsewhere and/or adapted.
  • From research to practice: Connecting ecosystem services science with policymakers, practitioners, and diverse sectors to accelerate NbS implementation.
  • Nature-positive Solutions for a global future: How local insights can contribute to global environmental goals, such as the SDGs and biodiversity targets.

One Ecosystem at ESP11

On Thursday, 26 June, ESP11 participants will be able to hear about the innovative open-access, peer-reviewed journal One Ecosystem and meet Editor-in-Chief Prof. Dr. Benjamin Burkhard (Leibniz University Hannover, Germany) in a dedicated session, titled “Scholarly publishing and communication bridges traditional science with ‘alternative’ scientific resources the case of the ESP-born One Ecosystem journal”.

The session will present the unique features and opportunities provided by the journal, which was launched in 2017 from within the ESP community itself. Past and present authors, editors, reviewers and loyal readers are cordially invited to share their own experience with One Ecosystem with other attendees.

Welcome to the Pensoft stand!

As regular sponsors of the ESP event and long-time collaborator, One Ecosystem’s publisher: Pensoft will have a dedicated stand at the conference venue, where visitors will get the chance to learn about multiple scientific journals and books covering a variety of relevant topics; and different publishing services, including the ARPHA publishing platform designed for scientific journals, books and conference materials.

At the Pensoft stand, ESP11 delegates will also have the chance to learn about the progress and latest updates from the Horizon Europe project SELINA (an acronym for Science for Evidence-based and Sustainable Decisions about Natural Capital), where Pensoft has been assigned with the role of a leader for the project's communication and dissemination activities.

Having started in 2022 and set to run until 2027, SELINA comprises 50 partner organisations coordinated by the Leibniz University Hannover. The transdisciplinary project aims to provide smart, cost-effective, and nature-based solutions to historic societal challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security. One of the consortium’s main objectives is to identify biodiversity, ecosystem condition, and ecosystem service factors that can be successfully integrated into decision-making processes in both the public and private sectors.
